Warning signs include peeling or flaking coating, blistering or lifting, visible cracks, areas where the surface has worn through, and exposed aluminium or steel underneath. A noticeable loss of non-stick performance can also indicate wear, although sticking alone does not prove the coating has failed. Once the coating is visibly peeling, flaking or exposing the base metal, replacing the basket is the safer option.

Do air fryers leach heavy metals into food?

In a coated basket in good condition, food doesn’t contact the aluminium body, so metal transfer is minimal. Bare or scratched aluminium can leach, mainly with acidic or salty foods at high heat. EFSA identifies everyday foods as the main overall contributors to aluminium exposure, although it cannot precisely separate the contribution from cookware and other food-contact materials. Lead and cadmium are a separate concern tied to some glazes rather than to specified, compliance-tested ceramic coatings.

Are the chemicals in an air fryer dangerous?

The documented risks are specific and largely within your control rather than a general property of the appliance: overheating a coating past its rated temperature, cooking on a damaged coating, or putting unrated plastic in the hot zone. Used as directed, those risks stay low. If you prefer to avoid fluoropolymer coatings entirely, choose an air fryer with a food-contact stainless-steel or manufacturer-approved glass cooking surface and follow its stated temperature limits.
