How Much Electricity Does an Air Fryer Use?
A mid-sized air fryer uses about 0.75 kWh in half an hour — roughly 14 cents. Here’s what that costs in practice, and when an air fryer actually beats the oven.

Air fryers are cheaper to run than most people expect, but not quite for the reason they think. The wattage on the label is only half the story — the other half is how long the thing runs. Your bill is charged in kilowatt-hours (kWh), so here’s how to turn one into the other:
- Power — the wattage on the label, divided by 1,000. A 1,500 W air fryer is 1.5 kW.
- Energy — power × time. 1.5 kW for 30 minutes = 0.75 kWh.
- Cost — energy × your price per kWh. That’s what lands on the bill.
So the whole thing is kilowatts × hours running × your rate = cost per cook. Because air fryers are small and heat fast, they usually run for less time than an oven doing the same job — and that shorter runtime is where a lot of the saving comes from. Try your own numbers:

Against a full-size oven, the air fryer usually wins twice over: it draws about half the power (roughly 1,500 W versus 3,000 W) and runs for less time, because it preheats in 2–5 minutes and cooks around 20% faster. Watch-outs that quietly raise your bill
- Skip long preheats. Air fryers reach temperature in 2–5 minutes; a 10–15 minute oven-style preheat just burns energy.
- One side of a dual-basket doesn't draw full wattage — modern units scale power to the zone actually in use.
- Don't overcrowd the basket. Blocked airflow means longer cooking and more energy for the same result.
- Big meals in a small basket can cost more than a single oven cycle — the batch-cooking trap.
- Give high-wattage models (1,800–2,400 W) their own outlet. Sharing a circuit with a kettle, dishwasher, or microwave can trip the breaker.
- Electricity isn't always cheaper than gas — where gas tariffs are low, a gas oven can still cost less per hour.

Will an air fryer actually lower my electricity bill?
